Manitoulin Island RV Travel Guide: Routes, Campgrounds & Things to Do

Planning your next RVing adventure in Ontario? While the province boasts countless scenic destinations, Manitoulin Island deserves a top spot on your bucket list.
As the largest freshwater island in the world, Manitoulin is surrounded by the pristine, sparkling waters of Lake Huron. Nature lovers will find paradise here—the island features over 100 inland lakes, extensive hiking networks, and dramatic views along the Niagara Escarpment.
With quiet backroads, minimal traffic (there’s only one traffic light on the entire island!), and rich Indigenous culture, Manitoulin Island offers an unforgettable, stress-free RV road trip.
How to Get to Manitoulin Island in an RV
Because Manitoulin is an island, getting here requires a little advance planning. Whether you approach from the north or the south, the journey is half the fun.
1. From the South: MS Chi-Cheemaun Ferry (Tobermory to South Baymouth)
If you are traveling up through Southern Ontario, take the MS Chi-Cheemaun ferry.
- Route: Operates between Tobermory (at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula) and South Baymouth (Manitoulin Island).
- Season: Runs daily from May to October.
- Travel Time: Approximately 2 hours across Georgian Bay.
- RV Tip: Reservations are strongly recommended, especially during peak summer months, as large RV spots fill up quickly.
2. From the North: Little Current Swing Bridge (Highway 6)
If you are coming from Northern Ontario or driving around Georgian Bay:
- Route: Access the island via Highway 6 over the historic Little Current Swing Bridge.
- Details: This iconic structure is one of the few operational swing bridges in Canada. It opens on the hour for marine traffic during the summer, so plan for minor delays.
